What We Saw on Page 1 for Kelowna Therapy Searches

Before we recommend anything, we look at what is already winning. In May 2026 we pulled Page 1 of Google for the searches that drive real client inquiries in Kelowna — “counsellor Kelowna,” “therapist Kelowna,” “EMDR therapy Kelowna,” “couples counselling Kelowna,” “registered clinical counsellor Kelowna.” What we found is the entire competitive picture.

For the broadest term, “counsellor Kelowna,” Page 1 is split roughly into thirds. One third is taken by large group practices — Alive Counselling, OK Clinical Therapy Group (which runs 10 BC clinics with 80+ counsellors), Interactive Counselling, and Lakeside Clinical. Another third is taken by individual therapist directories — Psychology Today, Counselling BC, Theravive, Lumino Health. The final third sits with smaller specialty-focused practices that have built strong individual brands. Almost no one is doing badly. The bar is real.

Interactive Counselling — currently on Page 1 — features “Best of Kelowna Gold Award 2023, 2024, 2025” directly in its Google search snippet. That single badge boosts click-through rate by an estimated 15 to 25 percent over identical listings without it. SERPs reward visible trust signals. We help you build them.

The Two Ways Kelowna Counsellors Are Winning

1. Scale. OK Clinical Therapy Group has 80+ counsellors across 10 BC clinics. Alive Counselling has a sizeable team and a clear specialty stack. These practices win by sheer breadth — more therapists, more service pages, more reviews, more inbound links, more search terms covered. If you are a growing group practice, this is your playbook.

2. Specialty domination. Look at “EMDR therapy Kelowna” — the brand that wins Page 1 is literally named Kelowna EMDR Clinic. It is described as “the first EMDR-focused clinic in the Okanagan.” Look at “couples counselling Kelowna” — Jeff Hay’s website wins because every page communicates his stacked credentials (Gottman Method Level 3, Relational Life Therapy Level 1, EFT externship). Henry Sawatzky wins for the same reason. Specialty + visible credentials = top of Page 1.

If you are a solo counsellor or a small practice, you do not need to outscale OK Clinical. You need to dominate the specialty you do best.

The Map Pack — Where Most Kelowna Clients Actually Click

Above the regular Page 1 results, Google shows three local businesses on a map. For Kelowna therapy searches, that map pack captures the majority of clicks. Three things decide who shows up there: your Google Business Profile setup, your review count and average star rating, and how clearly your website tells Google you serve Kelowna.

The counsellors in the Kelowna map pack typically have 30 to 80+ reviews averaging 4.8 stars or higher, plus photos, posts, and current hours. Practices with five reviews and a stale profile do not appear there — full stop. Closing the review-count gap and rebuilding the Google Business Profile is where we always start a Kelowna engagement.

The Okanagan Trade Area Is Wider Than the City

Kelowna Trauma & Life Therapy explicitly states on its homepage that it serves “Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Peachland, and the Greater Okanagan area” — and ranks accordingly. Many of the Kelowna practices on Page 1 are picking up search traffic from West Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon, Peachland, Summerland, and even Penticton, just because they mention those areas on their site.

If your clients drive in from out of town, build pages that match what those out-of-town clients are searching for. “Counsellor West Kelowna,” “therapist Vernon BC,” “EMDR Lake Country” — every one is a wide-open search term where the competition is thinner than within Kelowna proper.

Directories Are Renting Your Audience

About a third of Page 1 for Kelowna therapy searches is Psychology Today, Counselling BC, Theravive, Lumino Health, and GoodTherapy. Being listed there has value — you appear inside a high-ranking page — but you also compete with every other Kelowna therapist in the same listing for the same click. The smarter long-term play is to keep your directory presence while building your own site to rank above those directories. Once your site is on Page 1 directly, you stop sharing the click and start owning it.

How We Compete on What Google Actually Shows

Everything we do for Kelowna counsellors maps to something visible in the SERP. Reviews, photos, and hours go into the map pack. Service pages and credential pages compete for the organic results. Award badges and clear specialty positioning lift click-through when you do appear. We do not chase invisible signals or technical jargon — we work on what shows up on Google when a Kelowna resident searches for help. If a client cannot see it, we do not optimize for it.
